EMALCSA Critical Infrastructure Use Case

EMALCSA Critical Infrastructure Use Case

The BRAIN-IoT is a project funded by the European Commission, under it Horizon 2020 Research and innovation program (H2020), to establish a framework and methodology that supports secure, smart, autonomous, and cooperative behaviours of populations of heterogeneous IoT platforms. In the context of the project, the water infrastructure of EMALCSA was selected as specialized scenario of critical infrastructure, defining a set of use cases for demonstrating project results. The scenario is defined into these use cases and described using common formats in order to be able to obtain a coherent model of involved actors, stakeholders, expected roles, workflows and interfaces, which can feed the development process. The use cases presented are:

  • Catchment optimization in function of the consumption.
  • Provisional monitoring systems.
  • Confirmation/verification system of data.
  • Industrial security and safety of edge IoT devices in the infrastructure.
  • Reading process of the water meters.
  • Analysis regarding the dam doors.
  • Control System for the water supply between Alvedro Deposit and Eirís Deposit.

The Brain-IoT framework aims to provide different solutions or enhances to the use cases defined in the project:

To optimize the pumping of the catchment for minimizing the discarded water taking into account the inertia of the pumping.

To provide a smart framework to insert measurement devices into the infrastructure and connect them with IoT platforms.

To provide a confirmation system of data, based on different lectures of sensors that have measurable levels and to correlate the signals between them.

To guarantee the constraints of industrial security and safety.

To provide Integration between different platforms and guarantee the communication between them for exchanging data and information.

To provide a smart behaviour related with the opening of the dam gates through an analysis related with meteorological prevision, water level of the dam, etc.

To provide smart control of the valves taking into account predictive algorithms in functions of water consumptions, improving the control network.

These use cases will guide the development phases within the technical work packages. The water scenario involves different IoT platforms, SICA, sensiNact, SOFIA2, and other private platforms, and there were identified three groups of possible stakeholders:

Companies and institutions that manage urban water supply and sanitation systems.

Manufacturers and integrators of monitoring systems for water systems.
